Fun Poker Phrases
If you can’t shuffle chips with one hand, then use as much jargon as possible to intimidate your opponents.
Chop — To split the pot during a tie. It’s usually a two-way chop but three-way chops and beyond are possible.
Kicker —The tie breaker when two people both have the same type of hand (for example both people have a pair of aces), but poker is won with the best 5 cards so you go down until you have a tie breaker.
Side pot — The max that someone can win when they go all in but other players bet further.
Wet board — When the community cards (the board) are interesting and could give people really good hands, for example if there’s a lot of one suit and someone might have hit a flush.
Dry board — When the community cards (the board) are pretty disconnected and don’t seem to help form a hand that’s more complex than a pair.
Backdoor [flush / straight / etc] — A [flush] that is completed with both the turn and the river cards.
Runner runner — Catching two required cards, one after the other, to complete a strong holding.
Gutshot straight draw — A drawing hand that needs a specific card in the middle of a straight to hit the straight.
Open-ended straight draw — A drawing hand that needs one of two cards to complete the edges of their straight.
Pocket rockets — Pocket pair of aces.
Jiggies — Pocket pair of jacks.
Two seven off-suite rule — A two and a seven that are different suits is the worst starting hand in Texas Hold’Em. Some house games have a rule where if you get to the flop and win with a two seven off-suite (even if everyone folds), everyone at the table has to pay you a dollar (or a small blind or big blind, whatever is chosen in advance). This rule can be customized.
Double board bomb pot rule — Every time the flop is all the same color, the next hand is a double board bomb pot, weee. This rule can instead be customized to happen on every hour.
